On his 40th birthday, Scott made a life-changing decision to put his health first.
After surviving multiple serious health challenges and overcoming alcohol addiction, he underwent gastric bypass surgery and joined The Lab Liverpool just three weeks later.
His goal? To rebuild his health, stay sober, and create a new lifestyle for himself.
The Struggle / Barriers
Scott’s journey began from a place many wouldn’t imagine coming back from.
“After facing life-threatening health challenges, including sepsis, pneumonia, a stay in intensive care, and four weeks of hospital rehabilitation, I knew that it was time for a change. On my 40th birthday, I made the decision to prioritise my health, beginning with undergoing gastric bypass surgery.”
But physical health wasn’t his only battle.
“In addition to my physical health struggles, I had also been battling alcohol addiction for many years. However, I’m proud to say that I’ve been sober for 19 months now, with the help of various support groups.”
Living with COPD added further complications. Simple exercise could be daunting, but Scott was determined not to let it stop him.
The Difference at The Lab
Scott joined The Lab just weeks after surgery, eager to start his new chapter. What he found was more than just a gym.
“The coaches and team at The Lab have been incredibly supportive throughout my journey. From the very beginning, they’ve taken the time to understand my unique situation, including my health struggles and my journey with sobriety.”
The support extended beyond exercise.
“They’ve provided personalised guidance and encouragement to help me stay motivated and achieve my goals. They’ve also helped me understand the importance of rest and listening to my body, which has been crucial in managing my COPD.”
The community played an equally important role.
“The entire team has fostered a welcoming and supportive community that’s been a valuable part of my recovery. They’ve given me a space where I feel comfortable sharing my struggles and celebrating my successes, which has made all the difference in my journey.”
The Results
The impact of Scott’s consistency and commitment has been life-changing.
“Since joining The Lab, I’ve seen massive improvements in both my physical health and overall well-being. First and foremost, I’m proud to have maintained my sobriety for 19 months, and the supportive community at The Lab has been instrumental in helping me stay on track.”
Physically, the progress has been just as inspiring:
-
“I’ve lost 46kg and continue to make progress.”
-
“I’m seeing increased muscle definition, which is a testament to the hard work I’ve been putting in at the gym.”
-
“My blood pressure has improved significantly, and I’ve been able to reduce my medication dosage to the lowest level.”
Perhaps most importantly, Scott now feels stronger, healthier, and more empowered to take charge of his life.
In Scott’s Own Words
“The Lab has become so much more than just a gym to me, it’s truly become a part of my life. It’s a place where I feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to achieve my goals. The community at The Lab is like a second family, and it’s become a home away from home for me.”

When asked what he’d say to anyone considering The Lab, Scott doesn’t hesitate:
“If you’re considering joining The Lab, let me tell you, it’s a decision you won’t regret. The coaches aren’t just knowledgeable, they genuinely care about your progress. What truly sets The Lab apart is the sense of belonging and camaraderie you’ll feel the moment you walk through the door.”
