Open Gym vs Small Group PT - What’s Right for You?

Open Gym vs Small Group PT - What’s Right for You?

Posted by Tommy Halligan on

Trying to decide between Open Gym or Small Group Personal Training? If you're not sure what’s right for you, you’re not alone, it's one of the first things people ask us when they walk through the door.

Here’s a breakdown to help you figure out what’s best for your goals, preferences, and training style.

What is Open Gym?

Open Gym gives you full access to our space, equipment, and flexibility to train on your own terms.

  • Ideal for people who already follow their own plan or have gym experience

  • Suits independent training styles, no fixed start times, full control over your sessions

  • We do offer basic programme uploads via TrueCoach if you want some guidance, just ask

  • Coaching isn’t included in Open Gym sessions, so it suits people confident in their form and planning

The Lab is a clean, well-equipped, city-centre space, but without the chaos of a commercial gym. The community is friendly, the atmosphere’s focused, and there’s plenty of room to train without queuing for machines.

What is SGPT (Small Group Personal Training)?

SGPT combines personal coaching with group motivation. Everyone follows their own plan, but you train together, with support from a coach every session.

What’s included:

  • Tailored training programmes via TrueCoach

  • Coaching feedback and real-time support

  • Bi-weekly check-ins to adjust training or goals

  • Friendly environment where you’re never left to figure it out alone

  • More affordable than 1-to-1 PT

Don’t just take it from us, here is Claire from our SGPT: “Every session is tailored to you. I never dread coming in, I look forward to it and always leave feeling great.”

Still unsure if SGPT fits your goals? Read Is Small Group PT Right for You? to get a feel for how we structure sessions and support.

How to Choose the Right Option?

We usually recommend Open Gym to people who already know what they’re doing, people with their own programme, lifting experience, and confidence in the gym.

If you’re the kind of person who enjoys autonomy and knows how to push yourself, it’s a solid option.

On the flip side, SGPT is great for people who want structure, real-time coaching, and that extra nudge to stay consistent.

If you've ever walked into a gym and felt unsure what to do or how to make progress, this one's for you.
